Nick Hellyar is a successful small businessman with his own real estate company specializing in residential properties. Nick attended Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School. He became interested in politics when his former sixth-grade teacher ran for Congress and encouraged his former students to get involved and learn how politics work. Nick found he enjoyed the work so much that he went on to serve in a of number of successful city and state campaigns and was employed by several elected officials to manage constituent services in their offices. Nick knows that the City of Houston must work for everyone and he will prioritize helping neighbors get real problems solved.
“Helping people fix issues that affect their daily lives is what I love most and that passion for problem-solving is what drives me to run for City Council.”
District C residents deserve to know that they’re safe in their homes and in their neighborhoods. Nick Hellyar will advocate for more cadet classes for the Houston Police Department and support expansion of programs like the mental health unit. He wants HPD to be a presence in the community to prevent crime and to cooperate with ICE only when dealing with persons accused of violent crimes. Nick has been endorsed by the Houston Police Officers’ Union.

District C is a unique community with many neighborhoods where residents walk for recreation or to visit restaurants and retail outlets. Nick wants to ensure that District C’s streets and sidewalks work for all people, whether they are walking, biking or driving—strengthening walkability and improving transit safety. Some neighborhoods have requested speed humps on their streets to slow down traffic and keep our children safe; those requests need to be fulfilled. Some streets need repairs or have potholes that should be filled. Safe streets for all should be the city’s goal.

Whoever is elected to the District C seat will take office as City Council begins its review of the Mayor’s proposed new budget. Nick Hellyar has worked in two City Council offices and will use the experience gained in those jobs to hit the ground running on the budget review as an active participant on Council. District C cannot afford to have someone learning the process on the job. Nick has the experience and understanding of City Hall needed to step in on day one and effectively advocate for the district during the budget process.

Working in the real estate business and helping place people in apartments, Nick is uniquely aware of how rents have skyrocketed. There are actions the city can take to ensure affordable housing is obtainable, especially for young people, including tax breaks for companies that build real affordable housing, changes to required minimum lot size regulations to allow affordable housing to be built, and pushing for new rules to allow accessory dwelling units to be built.
Nick believes District C needs an overall transit plan, looking ahead rather than reacting to issues street by street. The goal is to ensure that vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists are all moving safely together.
Nick believes every street project should have community input and be reviewed from the viewpoints of everyone who will be using the street. He will work to bring City officials and residents together to work out a plan that works for all. Nick is not in favor of removing infrastructure that has already been built.

Houston is considered the national model for helping people out of homelessness. And the reason is “The Way Home,” a coalition of government, private, philanthropic, faith-based, neighborhood and local homeless service organizations that works to prevent and reduce homelessness using the best practice of “Housing First.” Since 2012, The Way Home and its partners have successfully housed over 36,000 people.

Nick Hellyar knows that flooding continues to be a problem in Houston and District C. Flooding is a regional issue so there is no one solution; it’s one that requires government agencies to work together. For example, raising the bridges over Bray’s Bayou along North and South Braeswood, which helps with water flow during a flood event, is a great example of agencies working together to solve flooding problems. We need to keep our ditches maintained and open. We must keep our city clear of impediments to water flow such as picking up our heavy trash on a timely basis. And especially in our lower-income communities, we need to clean up dumped trash. More park areas like Willow Waterhole Greenway can help hold water on their land and allow it to be slowly absorbed into the ground there, rather than fill our neighborhoods.
